Project Description
Opened in 2012, the 47,000 square foot three-story Barnhart Cancer Center features advanced cancer treatment technology and a new healing environment. The facility consists of a radiation therapy center, infusion center and medical offices. The Barnhart Cancer Center’s technology includes the first Varian Medical Systems’ TrueBeam STx™ radiotherapy/radiosurgery system in San Diego. With treatment plans mapped out using a four-dimensional CT simulator, TrueBeam linear accelerators allows physicians to target tumors anywhere in the body, including the lung, abdomen, breast, head and neck. Stereotactic radiosurgery provides powerful noninvasive treatment that can be delivered even in the most complex areas without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue. Additional treatment options include high-dose-rate brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and image-guided radiotherapy. The Barnhart Cancer Center’s healing environment features naturally lit radiation therapy suites and areas for meditation, aromatherapy and Healing Touch. An Infusion Center is available for patients who choose to receive treatments with a family member or friend. The Barnhart Cancer Center offers other programs and services, including a breast cancer patient navigator program, support groups in English and Spanish, nutritional consultation, and spiritual and palliative care. The construction was part of a design-build development by Makena Medical.
